A Long Time Smoker Speaks Out

For me smoking cigarettes is an addiction, an obsession. I have smoked most of my adult life. Sure-I quit several times-10 years being the longest period of abstinence. So if I could make it that long-what happened?

Well mostly it was a separation and ultimately a divorce that weakened my resolve.

We smokers make all sorts of excuses for continuing, but I am intelligent enough to realize that I’m just lying to my friends and family, and more importantly, I am lying to myself.

We smokers will grasp at any evidence that smoking is OK! My step-grandfather smoked a pack of unfiltered Camels for as long as I knew him. He was in his mid-nineties when he died-not of cancer or heart disease.

We can call the cause of death simply old age. . .

I’m Really in The Nicotine Rut

My days all begin about the same way: During the week I drag my weary butt out of bed at 5:00 a. m. , shower, dress and then walk the dog. All this time until I hook up Cindy’s leash I’m thinking about that first cigarette.

A short time ago -in an email exchange, a lifelong friend said, “You’ve been smoking so long that it probably won’t make any difference if you did quit. ” Unfortunately I tend to believe him.

So what is on the horizon for us smokers? The most recent flash of light came from a report I read about a very amazing discovery. I stopped smoking myself — many years ago. It was very hard. I stopped many times before I was able to make it stick.

This story of mine goes back 6 years, when after smoking ordinary packet cigarettes from 1- 2 packets a day (And sometimes more) for the previous 34 years, I decided to give them up and swap to hand rolling my own.

My rationale did not take into account the amount of actual smoke that was still going into my lungs, and also coking up my whole respiratory system, but I solved that one by being an active twice weekly squash player, so my cardio-vascular would be protected and I would be fit.

What a plonker.

The challenge I had, was that I had tried to give up a couple of times before, and had tried the nicotine patches and the chewing gum when they came out, but ended up having a ciggy while still wearing the patch chewing the gum, so gave up on that idea as they did not work. The thought of actually using willpower to quit smoking, frightened the life out of me, more so than smoking itself; how many people can relate to that one.

I did try using willpower but failed miserably, like all the other attempts to try and give up, that I had unsuccessfully tried.

Tip #5: Do this for 21 straight days

Studies have shown that people can develop a new habit if they do something for 21 days in a row. That means after you do this for 21 days in a row, it will be more natural to not smoke than to smoke. Just realize that the earliest stage will be the most difficult. But it is probably the most important part of the journey.
